The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was the head of the government of Great Britian. The Prime Minister and Cabinet (consisting of all the most senior miniters, who were government department heads) were collectively accountable for their policies and actions to the Monarch, to Parliament, to their political party, and ultimately to the electorate. There were no set terms for the office of Prime Minister, and elections were held sporatically; afterwords, the reigning British monarch would appoint the new Prime Minister or appoint the old one. There was no single document creating the postion, as it evolved over time, although most historians agree that the first Prime Minister was Sir Robert Walpole in 1721. The office was abolished along with the British monarchy in 1817, after former General and then Prime Minister Arthur Wellesley (later Arthur Wellington) overthrow the government and established the Commonwealth of Great Britian.
